Ugh... The LAST things I want to have to listen to on my way to Cancun are 1. some female crying on her freaking cell phone about how much she's going to miss her current bf, or 2. some "suit" who thinks the world will come to an absolute END if he doesn't keep his too many social networking sites updated...you know the type...the ones who have to speak everything they're typing out loud. People like to RELAX while flying, not be annoyed by hearing one side of a hundred different cell conversations. Seriously, don't you get even a LITTLE ticked when people begin practically shouting so that THEIR conversation is heard above everyone else's?

hello?
NorCalBear84, you're an idiot. Most cell phones wont even work once you're in the air and miles off the ground. Cell phones, both analog and digital, work on radio signals and a plane at cruising altitude is way out of range of the ground based signal. The specialized phones sometimes found on-board work differently than the phone in your pocket.

I hope they don't allow cell phones to be used on flights. I don't want to hear personal or business calls while I'm a captive audience sitting next to someone talking on a cell phone. They usually speak louder than they would in regular conversation and it is more than annoying.

This is ridiculous. I travel leisurely once as a year. Take into consideration what you're saying and think if you're me or someone on a business trip. You can't keep your phone in your bag for a few hours? How desperate are you for communication? I'll be leaving for Japan on the 16th and thats a nine hour flight. I don't need to tweet what they served me for dinner or that I'm gonna try to sleep for the next 4 hours. Your arguement is stupid. Sinse 9/11 a lot has changed. There are new rules and regulations enforced by the laws of our respectful countries and I will respectfully obey them. When you say 95% of people on planes leave their phones on, does that mean you are one of them and you are using it? Maybe I leave it on, but if I remember to or I'm asked over the announcements, I'll turn it off! I hate listening to morons yaking on their phone whether it be intellignet conversations or not, turn your stupid phone off and try to manage without your precious phone for a few hours. I know I can.

fiz, You're an idiot. It doesn't affect the plane AT ALL. Now, I DO agree that it would be confusing and problematic for people to be on phones. Even Myth Busters busted the phone interference crap. Apparently (and I don't know all the details) when cell phones first came around there were some problems with interference, but they fixed it. I don't really care about this argument, but the cell phone sending out a call does NOTHING. Also, to NorCalBear84 - Who the hell has service up there? I sure don't.

why should I paid for phone service on an airplane, when I can use my own phone and save money. Most planes now days have phone service and the airtime is very costly this is from place experience. I would rather use my own phone I know the rates will be what my plan is

Did you sleep thru all your science classes dude? For one thing, the space is TOO confined for everyone to carry on a conversation at one time. There would be so much noise and confusion you wouldn't be able to hear yourself think. The science part is, it doesn't matter at ALL if the phone is ON, it matters if a call is made. That's when the phone sends the signal. All the cell phones sending signals at once is TOO much electromagnetic interference at one time. Maybe you want to risk your life so some jackass can talk about some idiotic part of their day, but I sure as hell don't.

It is really the FCC and cell phone use is mostly permitted just not in flight. However, certain frequencies are allowed. The FCC is no joke. They did not just pull this out of a hat. When planes crash typically everybody dies. Your call could not possibly be more important than the three-hundred plus lives on the plane not to mention the families affected. There is a reason why risk of dying in a plane crash is so low. 1 out of 2,067,000 (pbs.org nova planecrash) You don't get that by virtue. Sorry. The call can wait.

"Everyone has a cell phone"? WRONG. You obviously haven't visited any 3rd world countries lately. Or even cared enough to learn about them, for that matter. Tell me, do the majority of Tibetan people own cell phones? NO. They own houses, beds, fields and that's about it. They seem perfectly content to me! And don't give us crap about how "cellphones obviously don't interrupt the air traffic signal, lol, duh!" My uncle owns a small plane and will occasionally take some of my friends and I flying. Several times my friends have whipped out their phones and started blabbing on them about unbelievably unimportant things, and each time my uncle would have to yell back to us, "Turn off your damn phone! We could crash!" We haven't crashed. But we COULD. I'd rather have the safer "we will not crash" than the less reliable "we probably won't crash", thank you very much.

Addressing Every Point
So let's start from the beginning. You say that everyone has a cell phone. My dad doesn't. And frankly, right now, he is upstairs watching TV in his room. He's not dead. And think of everyone before cell phones. If they couldn't survive without cell phones, then you wouldn't exist. You also say that you should be allowed to talk. Hey, you ARE allowed to talk. Talk to a friend or family member who's on the plane with you, or talk to that random stranger next to you. Maybe you'll make a new friend. You can watch movies and, on some planes, TV. The movies are recorded, and the TV has been tested several times and proved safe. People are scared of what MIGHT happen with using a phone on the plane. And that can also work for my rebuttal for your "crap about how it'll interrupt with the air traffic." It has happened. It happened a few times, so to be on the safe side, they ban it. Mythbusters tested it, and it didn't work, but that was a test on the ground, not in the air. So who's to say you'll have the same results in the air? And now, your next point addresses peer pressure. Other people leave their phones on, so I can leave mine on. Well how bout this: Other people rob a bank, so I'm just gonna go walk into the nearest Chase bank and say "GIMME A THOUSAND DOLLARS!" and it'll be okay because everyone else does it. No. Just no. Besides, most phones have a setting called "Airplane Mode." it's just like the normal mode, except it doesn't send or receive any signals. People with this mode CAN leave their phones on. You say that you like hearing other people's stories. I have two things about this: one, didn't your mother teach you that it's rude to eavesdrop? What if that was you, except you were talking to someone about something really embarrassing, say, like, you have really bad diarrhea? And two, especially on longer flights, some people are trying to sleep, and you're trying to tell your friend about who-cares-what? That's also rude. If you really HAVE to stay connected to everything, then you need help. Seriously. Here's a suggestion for breaking the habit: be a kid again. You can do this in one of two ways: get grounded or go to summer camp. You get grounded, you can't have anything as far as phones and such go. You go to camp, it's the same thing. Your last point is that it's 2009 (now 2010) and we can't use phones in the air. For all I care, it could be 1492 or 2430. We're never going to have made EVERY technological advancement out there. Oh, you think we will? Have you seen a time machine or a jet pack lately? Or what about even a way to make a true utopian society? Yeah, I didn't think so.

You really can't live 2 hours without twitter or facebook or calling someone? I thought I had issues--take a train- you can leave your phone on when you do that--take a good 24 hour trip, which would have taken maybe 3 hours on a plane-do that a couple of times and then you will see what it would be like if planes allowed that kind of thing-loud and noise noise noise all the time and you can forget a nap or a moment of silence-I think that just turning the phone off is worth not having to do the train thing--but I don't know for you...you might just be so infatuated with that phone you might would do it...oh and the "95 % of people leaving their phones on during the flight" comment is bologna--those 95 % are people turning their phones back on after they announce that they can be turned on after landing at the destination... notice the chiming of different service providers ringing out across the plane once we land every time I fly--but you are the 5 % that didn't turn their phone off and are too busy blubbering to yourself about how you lost 2 precious myspace hours to hear it I guess--c'mon man really? Humans need "personal alone time" you need to take a few moments to just sit in silence and think about nothing, and order a drink geez. I really feel bad for the people that you do know because I would be begging for you to shut up---maybe your friends like it when you fly because then you will leave them alone for a little bit. Have you ever watched mythbusters? They proved that cell phones do spike radio frequencies so there is reason to believe that cell phones cause problems--news flash for you on that--. I am not going to toy with the idea. I do not need my phone every second of every minute, every minute of every hour, every hour of every day, every day of every week that I would risk being a land dart. I honestly don't know anyone who does--until you--- Just post when you are flying and your flight number so I can be sure I am not on the same plane with you dude.

Cellphones are not a necessity. And believe it or not, you CAN last an entire flight without needing to call someone. I do not want to be seated next to some annoying doofus who spends 3 hours talking to someone about what they did that day, who they like, and when they had their last bowel movement. On a more technical note: when in flight, you change cell areas so fast that there is no service anyway. Even if they let you use your cellphone, you would be out of any service area.

Also, may I add: You know that annoying sound when your cell phone gets too close to your computer/car/TV stereo/speaker? That "Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt" sound? Imagine the pilot hearing that, non stop, in his ear piece, for the entire flight. He can't take off the headset, turn it off or turn it down because he needs to listen out for other aircraft or control towers.

if you despirately need to use a phone, the planes actually do have them available if you want to s[BLEEP] out the money to use it. i don't believe that them being that much of a "necessity" that you can't go an hour or two without texting or calling someone. that actually sounds more like an addiction and needing your fix. i think the biggest thing you have working against you is the fact that this seems to be an argument about the selfishness to talk on a phone if you want to, and not particularly worrying about your safety or the fact that everyone around you will have to listen to your conversation.

Phones transmit waves as you should know. These waves affect the transmissions between the plane and control tower. That could result in a storm being unknown to the pilot, resulting in danger and death. How come you are a grown man and do not know this?

the reason why cell phones are not allowed in places like hospitals, air planes etc. it because the incoming signal can and will disrupt equipment. I had my cell phone sitting on a computer, before the phone rang my computer screen went crazy, then the phone rang. I don't know why but the signal will interfer with equipment. Besides your on a plane for goodness sake, sit back and enjoy the ride.

I think cell phone use should be restricted in more places then on a plane. But the fact is that he plane is private property, whatever rules the airlines want to create or enforce, in conjunction with the FTA regulations is up to them. Cell phone use is't that dissimilar to speaking with someone seating next to you, but speaking to the person next to you doesn't create electrical interference. Whether or not cell phones actually do that is anyones guess. I think it probably ranks up there with using your cell phone next to a gas pump. The odds of it having a catastrophic affect are probably slim to none. But I for one don't want to be on the plane when the odds payout. Besides your on a plane flying at 500mph, I don't care that you want o stay connected with your buddies.

People on an airplane watching movies and/or listening to music (headphones or earphones!!) does NOT create verbal sound that can easily and readily be overheard by others in a close confinement setting, as does a phone conversation -- GET IT? Rules that would allow ten, twenty, or potentially a hundred or more phone conversations in an airplane tube in close quarters is a proposal that is, at best, inconsiderate, and at worst also so myopic and ill-conceived that it is easy to attribute being a selfish idiot to the person who advocates such rules!

People talk on their cellphones everywhere. Why not on a plane? Because it is annoying. Also, while people may have their cellphones on in an airplane, they are more than likely on plane mode. If not, there is a difference between a cell phone just being on, and a cell phone transmitting. I would hate to be the person who has to listen to your convo the whole plane ride and then have the plane go down because of it. Even if there is a small percentage of that happening, I'd rather not risk it just to talk on a phone instead of reading for a coupe hours.

There are few things more annoying than having to listen to someone yak away on a cell phone on buses, in restuarants and theatres (whereever u have people trapped .... well, on planes it would be even more so because people around u do not have the freedom to move seats or leave. Its all about treating people around u with respect sir. Its called etiquette, and all that means is acting in a way that makes others around u feel comfortable. Forced to endure someones unending moronic converstaions is torture for just about everyone. Think about about this: you are on a plane trip which will take about 3.5 hrs... there si a teeanage girl sitting right behind you... she gets on the cell phone and starts yakking and squealling and swearing allllll the way to the end of the trip. THINK ABOUT IT!!! How about someone who speaks another language than your own? How would you like that in your ear for 3 or 4 hours every time you take a trip? For the comfort of ALL.... TURN IT OFF.

Why do you want to talk on the phone on a plane anyways? To gossip? People who use their cell on planes are rude, they blab blab blab about nothing, something that you look like you groove upon, and to tell all your friends about it. If you do your research, the aeronautics board does not want to take the chance on endangering peoples lives on the plane by the possibility of telephone frequencies imparing the controls on the plane. Its the caution, and you should be grateful that they are looking for your safety. But instead you rant like a little spoiled brat wanting to talk on the phone. Read vanity fair and talk with your fellow passengers on the plane, wait till you get off the plane before you yak.

what is wrong with this generation today??? today people think that they can't live without a cell phone attached to their hip or their ear. in my day, which wasn't that long ago, we waited till we got home or pulled over to the side of the road and slipped in a dime and made a phone call. today the cell phone has become the most ruddest invention made. i personally find having to listen to other peoples conversations rude and repulsive. when you are in the middle of a conversation with someone and their cell rings and all the sudden my conversation and my time becomes unimportant. everytime someone p[bleep] you on the road driving like a bat out of [BLEEP] they have a cell stuck to their ear. this cell phone thing has gotten way out of hand!!! now you got some nitwit that thinks it is his god given right to use a cell phone on a plane even though it is unsafe due to possible interference with the electronic systems on the plane or for whatever matter. are people so busy today that they cannot get on a flight for a couple of hours without having a cell phone stuck to their ear?? now if that isn't bad enough, we have people texting while driving a vehicle or a commutor train which resulted in the death of human lives. explain that to the families that have lost a loved on because some fool could not wait to communicate with a friend in a safe manner. unreal..... and we wonder why our country is going to [BLEEP] in a hand basket with this kind of thinking.

actually cellphone signals can work up to 8 miles from a tower so technically bleighvicious your information is not factual. for proof just google "30,000 ft in miles" and the results will be about 5 miles. i checked the range of cell phone towers and the found that the signal works between 5-8 miles. my opinion on this matter is this, people are annoying enough sometimes just talking while in-flight so adding someone going on for hours on a cell-phone would be [BLEEP]-near unbearable. now on the other hand i would have no problem with text messaging.

again in my opinion options are best rather than one side- its not that she is or isn't rude its she is trying to make a point to all the stubborn people also statistics are not always factual; as for the 30,000 ft maybe not a satellite tower but a satellite itself is more than 30,000 feet- (point:if you want cell phones on the plane or w/e device it should be your choice but keep in mind they don't want you to have them on or there for a reason and since its there "house" you should follow there request as you would take off your shoes b4 you walked into a house ( if they wanted you to)

OK, I know that I have available texting on my phone. Why can't you at least do that? It's quiet and it doesn't bother anyone trying to sleep. Although, I will say that if you are trying to sleep in a public place, good luck. There's bound to be more distractions than just cell phones. I mean seriously, are you going to shush anyone trying to have a normal conversation to someone there? Or tell the flight attendants to quiet down? Seems like a petty thing to argue about. Just let us have our phones already!

I agree. Cell phone should be allowed on planes, but they should be turned off. If you need to talk while ona flight (don't go). In tight quarters no one wants to listen to anothers phone conversation and we all know that cell phone conversations are always loud.

There are too many people in too small a space to ever allow cell phones on a flight. In case you haven't noticed, a lot of people sleep on flights. At least one of us would probably threaten nearby cell phone yackers within an inch of their lives if we had to listen to the constant droning of idiot repeat phrases like "I mean..." "Like..." "You know..." when we're trying to sleep. If they ever allow cell phones at all, I hope they are limited to text messaging with sound effects off!

Haha, gee... thanks. I tend to ramble when I think people are morons. Sorry if it bothers you! I however, do not ramble in person. And... I'm not sure if Sarah Palin was what I was going for. I am very well educated and well aware that you cannot see Russia from Alaska. HA! But Jack? Thanks for the compliment ;)

Wow...talk about rambling. Its not personal you have the right to ramble all you want on here. Your rambling however proves a good point. I wouldn't want to be seated next to you on my next flight and there for cell phones should continue to be outlawed on planes and the same goes for elevators. By the way, you remind me of Sarah Palin.
